Vitamin B12 is the vitamin you run out of slowly. Stores last years, then a vegan diet, metformin, a stomach-acid drug, or age catches up and the nerves and the blood count notice. Methylcobalamin is one of the active forms. Cyanocobalamin is the cheap stable form the body converts. A 1,000 mcg chewable is a repletion dose, not proof you were low. If you are tired, test. Do not treat a number you have not seen.
Who actually needs it
B12 sits in animal foods. Vegans need a source on purpose. Older adults absorb less because intrinsic factor and stomach acid drop. Metformin and long-term PPIs are the drug reasons clinicians check a level. Deficiency looks like numbness, a smooth tongue, anemia, or a brain that feels slower. On cognition and immune pages, that is a lab problem, not an energy-drink problem. A high serum B12 after you already supplement does not mean you needed the pill.
Chewing or letting it dissolve matters if the gut is the broken step. A swallowed tablet still works for people who absorb normally. 1,000 mcg is more than the RDA (2.4 mcg) because absorption of a single oral dose is a small percent. 5,000 mcg is not five times more useful. Methylcobalamin versus cyanocobalamin is a smaller argument than “are you low.”
Where it sits
On supplementation this is a gap-fill for a missing vitamin, next to vitamin D and iron. It will not replace sleep. It will not fix a B12 that was never low. Recheck if a clinician is treating a deficiency. Everyone else: food, or one low-drama tablet if the diet has no animal source.
