L-theanine is an amino acid in tea. At about 200 mg it takes the edge off caffeine without putting most people to sleep. Alone, it is a mild calm: a bit more alpha-wave story in small studies, a bit less jitter, not a benzodiazepine. The useful pairing is theanine plus the coffee you were going to drink anyway.
Dose and the job
200 mg is the number that shows up in the focus and “relaxed alertness” trials. 100 mg is a cup of strong tea, roughly, and often too little to notice as a capsule. 400 mg is not twice as clever. Take it with the coffee in the morning, or mid-afternoon if the crash is the problem. At night it is a maybe for people who are wired, not a substitute for the sleep schedule. It will not fix apnea.
Suntheanine is a patented L-isomer made to match the tea molecule. Generic “theanine” is sometimes a mix of isomers. That is the quality split, not a miracle. On cognition this sits next to caffeine and creatine, as a small smoother, not as the work.
Who skips it
If blood pressure runs very low, a calm amino acid is a reason to notice how you feel, not to ignore it. Pregnancy is a question for the clinician. On supplementation this is a maybe you can feel in a week. If you feel nothing, stop. Tea is still tea.
