FocusCircadian biology and time-restricted eating

Satchin Panda is why “stop eating after dinner” became a protocol with a mouse paper behind it. Circadian biologist, longtime professor at the Salk Institute, author of The Circadian Code and The Circadian Diabetes Code. His lab connected melanopsin (the blue-light sensor in the eye) to the master clock, then showed that when mice eat can matter as much as what they eat. Time-restricted eating, in his version, is a consistent 8 to 12 hour window. Not a spiritual fast. A schedule for the liver, the gut, and the pancreas.

The stealable bit is boring and high leverage. Pick a window you can keep on weekdays. Finish food earlier than your current 10 p.m. snack. Keep the window regular, including weekends if you can stand it. Light in the morning still matters, because the clock is not only in the stomach. The myCircadianClock project tried to take that out of the lab and into phones. Firefighters in the Healthy Heroes work got a 10-hour window without calorie counting and moved some cardiometabolic numbers. That is the human-sized version of the mouse cages.

TRE is not magic protein-sparing wizardry, and it is a worse idea if you are under-fueled for training (see Sims). Panda’s clock is a timing tool. It does not cancel dinner quality or a deadlift.

In 2026 Science reported that Salk had investigated him for sexual misconduct, did not publish the findings, and that he resigned that August. The circadian papers do not become false because of a workplace investigation. He also stops being a frictionless guru. Use the eating window. Do not outsource your ethics to a lab brand.
